Hamas Shows Gives a Glimpse of the Future

Maan News is reporting today that Hamas attacked a group of Shiites and called them a "criminal gang".

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- A group of Shiite worshipers say masked police violently raided a religious service in the northern Gaza Strip on Saturday, prompting furious denials by the Hamas-dominated government in the territory.

Around 20 followers of the Shia branch of Islam were performing a ceremony for Ashura, the commemoration of the death of Prophet Muhammad's grandson Hussein, when masked police stormed the private home in Beit Lahiya, they told Palestinian human rights groups.

Security officers beat the worshipers with clubs, and took them for interrogation at a police station where they were further assaulted, they told the Gaza-headquartered Palestinian Center for Human Rights.

Several sustained fractures and bruises from the beating and were taken to Balsam and Kamal Odwan hospitals, PCHR said.

SO... Hamas - the winner in the last Palestinian elections and rulers of the Gaza strip - WHO also recently joined the PLO (along with the radical Palestinian Islamic Jihad) is showing what it considers to be religious freedom. According to the Palestinian Authority all religions are to be tolerated and respected however, Palestinian Shiites have claimed that they actually get worse treatment at the hands of the P.A. than they do by Hamas (whose largest benefactor is the Shiite Government of Iran).

However, Hamas has said in the past that Palestine is a Sunni country where Shi'ism does not exist. They also said that they respect those "non-existant" Shiites in Gaza. Of course, here is Hamas talking about religious freedom:

"We respect all the doctrines around the world, especially the Shiite school, and we don’t intervene in what they believe and we don’t want them to intervene in our beliefs as well," the statement said.

While vowing to study allegations of human rights abuse, the interior ministry warned human rights groups to consult official sources and not believe just any account of events.

So Hamas "warned" Human Rights groups to consult the government eh? Basically saying - "Don't listen to those groups, just take our governments word for it. Interesting. How can anyone who claims they support human rights stand up for either this government OR for a government that includes these people as principle actors?

This is a frightening view of a future where Hamas is an integral part of the Palestinian Polity and a leading member of the PLO (the national representatives of the Palestinian people).

Speaking of the PLO, Haaretz is reporting that according to a "Palestinian militant" the PLO is considering a military option against Israel - PLEASE NOTE - THIS IS UNCONFIRMED as of now. Is that going to work as well as "Cast Lead" or Intifada II for them. I am not sure what that even means. HOWEVER, I did see these stories in Haaretz:

IDF ARRESTS TWO PALESTINIANS CARRYING PIPE BOMBS, AMMUNITION NEAR JENIN

The two Palestinians, aged 20, were arrested at the Salem checkpoint near the Palestinian city of Jenin, where four Palestinians were also arrested last week for carrying makeshift bombs

According to Israeli security forces' investigation into the previous incident, the weapons that were apprehended were supposed to be used to carry out an attack on a military court near the Salem checkpoint.

Since the second incident happened at the same place and within a short timeframe from the first, security forces believe the two Palestinians arrested on Monday had the same intention.

  1. Wow, Shites denited the right to practice their religion in Gaza? I'm sure Human Rights Watch is going to spring into action on this one...

    1. they might come down on Hamas, but not with the same vociferousness that they come down on Israel. Also I doubt they would put a Nazi enthusiast in charge of their Hamas reporting. Just sayin...

    2. But they did put him in charge of reporting - you should have seen his stuff from Cast Lead. Here is Garlasco about Hamas:

After Gaza, for example, he was very critical of Hamas. "They're thugs," he told me, describing how they kneecapped and killed Palestinians whom they suspected of collaborating with the Israelis. He went on to call Hamas "a bunch of fucking nutjobs" and told me I could print it, which struck me as pretty brave for a person who was probably heading right back into their neighborhood.

fiz... You know what... this is not about what HRW does or who picks on Israel more. It is about what Hamas did and what their inclusion into what the PLO means. I would rather discuss that.

  2. Muslim Brotherhood: Hamas is our role model

    Hamas joins Global Muslim Brotherhood

So are either of them as moderate as some indicate?

And should this alliance and the common purpose (destroying Israel and the West, and killing all Jews) be disseminated as the USA moves forward in talks with the MB as if these democratically elected groups somehow have intentions of promoting democracy as envisioned by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?

And does wanting ALL the facts to be dissemintaed make one "right wing" as many allege?

  3. @ oldschool - no... just you. This is not a bash Obama article and if you can't manage to keep that out - I will delete your comments. This is your first and only warning. Don't fuck with me today. I am telling you this upfront.

This article is set up to show what people are dealing with when they talk about Hamas and the P.A. - I will not allow this blog to turn into some Right Wing shithole that constantly uses misinformation or twisted views of reality to harp on alleged support from the Obama administration for the "global Jihad". There are other sites for that and this is not one of them.

You have been given fair warning.

  4. If the report about the PLO considering a military option against Israel is correct, it would go against every recent statement made by Mahmoud Abbas rejecting violent action and calling for limiting Palestinian actions to peaceful protest. Further, if they are considering this, then they should be prepared for the full Israeli military response and the fact that the key players in the world, as with the Second Intifada, might well be willing to give Israel the free hand it needs to defend itself. Unfortunately, I do believe that there is most likely some truth to this statement. And, if that is the case, I would attribute at least a portion of it to the influence that comes from Hamas and Islamic Jihad joining the PLO.

  5. I have to agree with you Reuven... I think that influence does come from Hamas and PIJ. But I blame the PLO for including those folks particularly at time when there are direct talks going now between Israel and the Palestinians.

The region seems to be on the verge of exploding with all that is going on. I am not sure how this is not going to be a mess in Six months let alone a year.

Have you seen reports of the hacker wars between Israel and Saudi Arabia? And then the Israelis are apparently arming and training the PKK (Kurdish militia) which will cause no end to problems with Turkey. The Egyptians seem all in with religious fanaticsm. But they have not abrogated the treaty with Israel yet - though - Hamas seems kind of cocky right now (so who knows what is about to happen).... AND don't forget Iran.... How fucked up is all this. Oh and I didn't mention Syria, Baharain, Bombings in Iraq,....

As they say "Oy, va voy"

  6. I agree with you on blaming the PLO for accepting them, although it certainly does seem to indicate that they are prepared to renounce their recognition of Israel. The religious extremism that is rising throughout the region is a problem and the only country where we are seeing a backlash against it is in Israel. As for the PKK, isn't that another Lieberman debacle? Seriously, why is this man still the foreign minister?

  7. Lieberman is unfit for the job of dog catcher much less Foreign Minister. How and/or why Likud chose to team up with those clowns is far beyond me. Why he didn't just make Livni F.M. and do a unity government with Kadima (not sure if that was possible - but I don't remember it being explored) is beyond me. BUT... he does get to enact his rightist agenda to continually feed his cronies on the right with "economic goodies" and "sweetheart deals", not too mention his continued push to create a One State solution without Kadima.

As far as Lieberman goes though - here is this: http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/news/israeli-prosecutors-to-open-hearing-on-indictment-against-lieberman-1.407682

Top prosecutors will begin a two-day hearing Tuesday on whether to indict Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman (Yisrael Beiteinu ) on charges of fraud, breach of trust, money laundering and witness tampering.

The hearing will be conducted by Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein and State Prosecutor Moshe Lador. Weinstein is expected to make a final decision on whether to indict Lieberman and other suspects in the case within the next few months.

The allegations against Lieberman relate to the period between 2001 and 2008, during which time various businessmen are suspected of transferring millions of dollars to companies under his control. For part of this time, Lieberman was a private citizen, but for the remainder, he was a Knesset member and cabinet minister.
